SkegX - BKSA slider & boardercross event

Date: 3rd and 4th June 2006
Finished: 2nd, ladies

Organised by Chrissie Redford from Cogee Surf Shop the first in the BKSA series of the Boardercross and Slider event was held at Skegness (Lincolnshire Coast).

SkegX beach

Although the Forecast had shown light winds for the weekend, Saturday arrived with sunshine and wind. The beach began to fill with public interest and it looked like the Slingshot Team had arrived as there were lots of Fuel kites being pumped up on the beach.

Flexifoil were showcasing their new range of power kites and Kirsty Jones arrived to support the event after just completing her record breaking crossing!

The inflatable’s were moored into place ready for the Boardercross Event and a meeting was called. It was decided to split the event into ladies and men’s heats with three rounds each. The aim was to sail a downward course jumping over the different sized inflatables, round the buoys and back to the beach in the fastest time.

Ladies went first with Kirsty taking a strong lead over the jumps; she managed to complete three clear runs in the fastest time! Being new to Boardercross I gave it my best shot and came in second with a good run on my last heat clearing all but one jump.

The men went second in pairs as they slightly out numbered the ladies and there was some good riding as well as good crashes!!! We had inflatable crashing, jumping over without boards, fighting to get to the inflatable first, scramble jumps and a few nice clear jumps as well.

It was great fun to take part in and everyone seemed to enjoy it so we’re hoping it will stay a fixture in the BKSA competition Circuit.

Unfortunately the wind didn’t stay around too long and it was decided not to run the Slider Competition. We did however get the chance to watch the first ever Pool Gap Competition, where top UK Wakeboarders had come to battle the two fixed rail sliders from a high 20 foot pool to the 30 ft long landing pool at the bottom.

On Sunday the weathermen had predicted the forecast correctly and the wind never came through strong enough. Instead we decided to wakeboard off the back of the Zap cap rescue craft to keep the crowds entertained.

The weekend turned out to be a great success with all the preparation and effort that had gone into the event. I definitely hope to come back next year!!!!
